Personal Background
Originally from Canada, Leo Seewald began his career in Asia as a solicitor in Hong Kong in 2000, later transitioning into the financial industry when he joined Manulife as Head of Legal and Compliance for Asia. In 2009, Mr. Seewald moved to Taiwan as Chairman of Manulife’s Taiwan asset management company and later joined BlackRock as Chairman and Country Head of BlackRock’s Taiwan operations from 2013 to 2019. He also served as the Chairman and later President of the American Chamber of Commerce in Taiwan.
Having fallen in love with Taiwan, Mr. Seewald decided to promote the country from more than just a financial perspective. He dreamed of traveling to all of Taiwan’s 230+ fishing harbours and sharing his journey with the world.
In 2020, he took his Taiwanese commercial fisherman’s exam and became a licensed commercial fisherman. This marked the beginning of a new chapter in Mr. Seewald’s life — he is now known as the “Happy Fisherman” for his award-winning, multi-season documentary on Taiwan’s fishing harbours.
